Pastor Stephen E. Schilke was born and raised in Rochester, MI. He was baptized as an infant and attended St. John Lutheran School for all eight years, being also confirmed there in 1960. He graduated from Rochester High School in 1964 and from Central Michigan University in 1969 with a BS degree in mathematics. In 1976 he received a MS degree in Athletic Administration from CMU. Steve taught mathematics and coached football and basketball in the Tri-City area of Michigan for many years, most of the time in Birch Run. He had the opportunity to have both of his children as students in math class and as athletes on sports teams.
In the mid 90’s, he left public education to prepare for the ministry at Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft. Wayne, IN. After completing his pastoral education in 1997, he was placed in Christ Our Shepherd, Newport, MI and then in 2000 he accepted a call to Holy Cross, Onaway, MI. He retired from full-time pastoral ministry in November 2008 and moved to the Bay City area.
Pastor Schilke began his Intentional Interim Pastor training in 2008. He has completed the six month program by the National Association of Lutheran Interim Pastors (NALIP) called “Basic Education for Intentional Interim Ministry”. He has had six previous Intentional Interim positions at Redeemer, Saginaw; St. John, Rochester; Trinity, Port Huron; Faith, Port Huron; Grace, Auburn and Hope Linden.
While attending CMU, Pastor Steve met and married Sharon Krupa and they have two adult children. Mark, his wife Raechel and their two sons, Jacob and Joseph, live in Flushing, MI. Dawn and her four children, Jared, Allison, Tyler and Elizabeth, live in Freeland, MI.
Now in her 20th year of teaching at Zion, Julie is a Zion School graduate and daughter of member Carol Boes. She received her B.A. from SVSU, her colloquy as a Lutheran teacher from Concordia University-Ann Arbor, and a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University-Ann Arbor. She and her husband Tony have three sons and a daughter-in-law: A.J. and Samantha, Charles, and Dan.
Jonathan joins our staff this year. He is a 2004 graduate of Concordia-St. Paul. He is married to Jaylyn and has a stepdaughter Lillian Clay, who is a senior at Western this fall and a son, Nicholas who will be three in December. Jonathan likes bike rides, bike repair, and camping.
Jonathan Miles Kamin is excited to officially join the ministry of Zion Lutheran Church and School. Jonathan grew up in Canton, and attended Tiny Tots Lutheran Preschool in Livonia, St. Michael Lutheran School in Wayne, and Lutheran High School Westland. Jonathan received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Valparaiso University in Classics in 2001, and his Master of Education Degree from Valparaiso in 2003.
Jonathan’s teaching career has taken him to Lutheran schools in Illinois, Florida, Kansas, and Michigan. After completing the LCMS School Leadership Development Program in 2008, Jonathan served two Lutheran schools in Kansas as principal. In 2012, Jonathan married Emily, a friend from his days at Valpo. They moved to Vassar just a few weeks after their wedding. Jonathan completed the Van Lunen Fellowship for Christian School Leadership in 2015.
Jonathan’s parents, Gary & Sue, met at a Lutheran school in Illinois and still live in Canton. Jonathan’s sisters and their families live in Canton and Livonia. Emily grew up very active in her Lutheran church in Ohio, and her family still lives in Ohio. Jonathan and Emily have one son, Noah, who is a very active, social, and curious five year old. He wants to be a zookeeper when he grows up, which seems quite fitting. Emily teaches dance in Frankenmuth and is also one of the leaders of the Girls of Grace Dance Ministry at St. Lorenz. While the Kamins plan to maintain their church membership and involvement at St. Lorenz for now, they are excited to grow as participants with the faith family
Mrs. Priem is beginning her 1st year at Zion. She graduated from CMU with a B.S. Education and a B.S. in Museum Studies. Originally from Charlotte, MI, Mrs. Priem has taught in Alaska, California, and Michigan. She and er husband, Ben have a small farm which includes turkeys, chickens, a duck, and their rescue dog, Suka. Her hobbies include reading, traveling, singing, and being outside.
Mrs. Gail is in her 15th year of teaching preschool at Zion. She received her CDA from Delta College. Mrs. Gail is also a licensed hairdresser and operates a salon in her home. She and her husband, John, have four daughters and eight grandchildren. She enjoys spending as much time with her family as possible.
Miss Schlosser is in her 2nd year at Zion. She graduated from MSU with a Bachelor’s Degree in Apparel and Textile Design. ?She has more recently received her Early Childhood Education credentials from Delta College. She continues to attend early childhood workshops and conferences. She has 3 nieces and 3 nephews with whom she spends lots of time supporting at their various activities. Becky is a member of Trinity Lutheran church on Broadway and is very actively involved in various music programs there. she is a color guard coach at Western High School and also directs and choreographs a local independent winter guard. In her free time, she enjoys reading, sewing, quilting, and doing alterations.
Christine, along with Holly Essex, serves as Admissions Counselor. She has 4 children: Ethan in 10th grade, Wyatt in 9th grade, Christian in 5th grade, and Liya in 3rd grade. She enjoys spending time with her kids.
Holly, along with Christine Bossbach, serves as Admissions Counselor. She has a Bachelor’s of Business Management from Western Michigan University. A lifelong member of Zion and graduate of Zion school, Holly is married to Jason Essex. They are parents of Zion students Henry (4th grade) and Wilma (Kindergarten). They enjoy spending time at the Nuffer family compound in northern Michigan. Holly also enjoys working on school functions with her Zion family, gardening, and getting out for a jog when she has time.
Mrs. Laboda serves Zion as the School Secretary. She has been the school secretary for 21 years; from 1987-2000 and then rejoining the staff in 2008. Mrs. Laboda was born and raised in Hemlock. Her family includes her husband Tim and their “four-legged” children, Riley and Roscoe. She has 1 brother, 1 sister, 4 nephews, and 1 niece. She enjoys reading, organizing, crafts, and quilting.
Mrs. Krupa is a graduate of Zion, Handy High School, and Delta College’s Childhood Education Program. She is married and has one daughter, Jamie, who is in the 11th grade at Western High School. She enjoys knitting, walking, scrap-booking, and serving as chauffeur to Jamie and her friends in the explorer group.
